Based on the growing body of compelling research and evidence, exercise should be part of a cancer treatment plan.
A recent statement from COSA recommends 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise (walking, swimming) and 2-3 sessions of resistance exercise (weights, pilates) per week for cancer patients.
Evidence shows that exercise is safe during cancer treatment and provides many benefits including: attenuation of symptoms, improved physical function, alleviation of psychological distress and improved quality of life.
Given the complexity of a cancer diagnosis, it is important to make sure that exercise is prescribed by a health professional who is qualified to assess and advise, such as an oncology physiotherapist.
Megan, our senior respiratory and oncology physiotherapist can help. Make an appointment to see her and get your program started, or call to discuss how exercise can help you through a cancer diagnosis and treatment.
